Anglicisms Once again ... Unfortunately, there are in English many terms that describe a given situation either better or just less than we could do this in German. Therefore, I speak also of "Environmental Portraits" Portraits by which I mean that are not in the studio and include your environment with ...
The images that we make today are incurred even before a time. My model was Peter, who established a private motorcycle repair shop, where several motorcycles were. My plan was to show him in his workshop, but does not use the clichés of big-bellied, tattooed motorcycle wrench in leather gear with pliers in his hand. To my Fortunately, Peter was neither tattooed nor paunchy ... :-)
For my first setup I wanted to include some color and thus represent the workshop somewhat mysterious. At the same time I wanted to share the light so that I could also create a good, high-contrast black and white version of it. The color version you see here:
see the setup for this photo below. And one more note in advance: The shown recording again only with all flash units emerged. My main light was a large softbox 60x60cm style Ezybox from Lastolite, which was mounted high on a makeshift gallows frontal stand. "Improvised" because at that time I had none on hand and therefore a monopod attached by means of a Superclamp at a 90 degree angle on a "normal" lamp stand. To solve Peters dark jacket from the background, I built another flash diagonally behind him, on the left of the camera and provided it with a blue color film. This flash, I turned slightly behind Peter, so that not only Peter's right arm, but also the motorcycles hit right in the picture and it also gave them a blue glow.
In order to see the motorcycles but not only as a silhouette, she also had to get in front of a brightening. This came a third flash is used, which was fitted here with a yellow film. This gave the area another color contrast of the workshop was a rather quite mysterious appearance. However, since the yellow light now met for much of the workshop included Peter, I sit behind the yellow color film or a Waabs, which delimits the strong light.
A fourth flash was originally planned to release Peter and motorcycles from the other side (right side of the camera) to the background. This was after unnecessary for my taste, so I switched off this.
If this color version but have too much color for one or the other, do you see down the black and white photo. Since I usually work more with reduced colors and saturated colors, try to avoid telling me the black and white conversion to much better.
an important approach for me is I always try to set the light so that I have multiple perspectives and thus different lighting scenes are to be implemented with only a light setup. This speeds up their own work, saving the unnecessary pauses and model trains at the same time his own eye. In this case, I turned off the yellow filtered flash and use only the main light with the blue ray of light and changed my position. A very narrow opening in Photoshop reinforced the changing of imaging.
then Peters son even came to us, so we still adheres to a "Father and Son" shoot. see sample photos from their next review.
